Cynthia E. Roe, LCSW
Pronouns She/Her/Hers

For over 30 years, I have had the privilege of serving clients from diverse backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, ages and stages, religious and spiritual backgrounds and other forms of diversity that I can’t think of right now! I just really have a passion for my fellow human beings, in all our presentations! Does this mean that I am completely bias free? No. Just that I am, like you, a work in progress. I come to this work with lived experience, expertise and training in the study and treatment of trauma, especially trauma related to involvement in the foster and relative caregiver system. I also specialize in working with all members of the adoption constellation. As I approach the fourth act of my career, I am excited to launch my private practice and continue on this healing journey.

My mission as a therapist, is to gently guide my clients back to the parts of themselves they have forgotten, hidden, or masked to survive and make sense of what has happened in their lives. To me, therapy is simply a conversation between two people (or between and amongst the therapist and group members). All participants in the therapeutic conversations are experts in their subjects. You, the client, are the expert on yourself. You know yourself better than anyone. The problems occur when we receive messages that there is something wrong with us. So many of us try to become who we think others want us to be and, in the process, lose sight of who we really are. Therapy can help you to see, own, embrace, love and (when needed) transform those lost or buried parts of yourself.

I specialize in working with individuals (adolescents and adults), who struggle with depression, anxiety, and trauma. Trauma exists in our memories, but it is remembered by our bodies even more. I work to gently guide my clients to experience and make sense of the ways in which their nervous systems have been impacted by the things that have happened to them. I support clients in learning the most basic skills of self-regulation, mindfulness, the power of the breath, self-compassion, connectedness and love (receiving and giving).

I have special expertise working with foster and adoptive families. My personal and professional experience, as the adoptive mom of two young men (in their late 30’s, granted, but always our boys!) and a social worker supporting foster and adoptive families, as well as relative caregivers, has enriched my practice and my life.

I have a passion for working with members of the LGBTQIA community, as both an ally and a member. I have received specialized training in providing sensitive, culturally competent therapy for members of the transgender community. I am able to complete pre-transition assessments when they are needed to move forward with medical transition.

There is an art to living and an art to healing. Sometimes we might look at other people and think, “They are better artists than I am, I’ll never be good at this.” But my belief is that we are all artists, born with the potential to create unique masterpieces out of the materials we have been given. My job is simply to gently remind you of this truth so you can pick up your paints again.
